Hi Andi,
ReplyDeleteI recently bought your book for my kindle and have been totally in awe the whole time!! I am in France for 8 weeks and had planned to do plenty of cycling with my bike and this has made me even more eager to go. I have one friend coming out for the first 3 weeks but after that I am on my own sadly as other friends have dropped out. Unlike you i have never been touring like this before and certainly not on my own!! I will be using your book like a bible to try and help me through the weeks (Any further tips much appreciated though!)
Happy planning for your next trip!
Jenny
Hi Jenny
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, what a lovely thing to say! I am forever touched and delighted that people like yourself take the time to write to me or leave a review on Amazon - it is absolutely wonderful and it is particularly brilliant that I'm helping fellow cycle-tourers! The main aim, after all!
Will you be doing a moving on tour or staying at one base or doing a mix? Your kindle will be a godsend!! It's so nice to read the stories of others when you're touring yourself. I would recommend my bible: Bike Touring Basics by Friedel and Andrew Grant - they also have an awesome website called Travelling Two.
I'm tweeting my bike touring tips every Thursday lunchtime which also appear on the Otley Cycle Club website - News & Events and then the reports section. Very short and sweet each week but may help you further. If you enjoy reading touring stories, I also wrote a short article about my snowy Easter cycle tour into the Yorkshire Dales earlier this year! That is in the same place on the club website.
I hope this is a starter for ten and am happy to help further if there's anything general or specific you want to ask.
Otherwise, have an awesome time! Let me know if you write a blog or tweet so I can keep up with you. Elan Homer who posted comments on this blog previously has just about completed his tour now and it's been fantastic following his progress.
Lots of luck and happiness!
Andi
Hello Andi
ReplyDeleteI have just finished reading your book. I will be leaving a 5* review on Amazon shortly.
For anyone reading this and considering it's purchase I urge you to do so. If short on time just read chapter 47, it may just change your life. Good luck.
Nick
Hi Nick
DeleteThank you so much for your lovely comments and also very much for your review on Amazon. I'm really glad you enjoyed the book (especially chapter 47 and my scary but exciting new life!). I really do appreciate you taking the time to let me and others know, thank you :-))
Best wishes

Hi Andi, I just finished reading your book and really enjoyed it, living in Lausanne Switzerland, it was nice to read about someone touring in this area and I could definitely relate to some of your opinions on the Swiss :-)
ReplyDeleteI've done a bit of touring myself and am getting ready for a small tour this year in Italy and was just wondering what the make and model of tent you used was as I'm toying with the idea of replacing my Vango Banshee.
Thanks
Darren
Hi Darren
DeleteIt's great to hear from you and I'm really glad you enjoyed my book, thank you!
You certainly live in a beautiful part of the world surrounded by those gorgeous mountains and the stunning Lac Leman.
The tent I tour with is a 2 person (debatable!) Vaude Ultralight and I love it! It's just under 2kg, has an inner & an outer which I keep attached together for simplicity (an extra bonus if it's raining hard), it's very waterproof, deals well when its windy and I particularly like being able to sit up in it and I like my little porch which is great for storing the panniers and any wet things. It only takes a few minutes to put it up and take it down with just the two poles.
On the downside, it is not a free-standing tent, it does need pegs to pull it out which can be an issue if the ground is poor and difficult for pegs to go in. Also, you'll have read one of my two tent poles snapped whilst on tour. This was easily resolved with the use of the pole sleeve which comes with the tent and Vaude sent a replacement pole with no fuss and at no cost as soon as I reported it.
I do hope this helps. Your tour in Italy sounds wonderful - have a great time!
Best wishes
Andi
